CrossFit Kids is a fitness program for all kids that simultaneously seeks to improve fitness and character traits that are directly related to success. Below is a description of the Kids program; after reading about the program, click here for current program details.
THE ATHLETIC OBJECTIVE:
Allow kids to move functionally, improve their fitness, and develop an appreciation for lifelong health and wellness.
THE DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE:
Value hard work; be nice to people; have fun. CrossFit provides a unique opportunity for kids to work hard and see positive results. Seeing the results of hard work pay off builds an appreciation for hard work, which will prove highly valuable in the development of character traits related to success. Because working hard is highly valued in CrossFit, there is plenty of room for kids to appreciate that above all else – more than being first or “beating” their peers. We value kids talking to each other respectfully and encouraging each others’ success – being nice to each other. While working hard and being nice, we make sure that kids have fun so that they know fitness can be rewarding and fun.
Research about how kids succeed academically and in life shows that kids need the ability to work towards short, intermediate, and long term goals – CrossFit allows kids to do just that. The development of perseverance, even in the face of overwhelming difficulty or failure, is another important character trait well matched to CrossFit.
THE FITNESS PRINCIPLES:
Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, and jump effectively and safely regardless of whether or not they play sports. Sports are specialized pursuits. Our goal is to support the specialist, but reward the generalist.
The CrossFit Kids and Teens programs are appropriate for kids of all ages, athletic interests, and athletic goals (from healthy living to elite performance). The programs are designed for universal scalability – the needs of kindergarteners and competitive teenage nordic skiers differ by degree, not kind.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Our CrossFit Kids classes are suitable for most kids ages 5-12. Just like CrossFit for adults, CrossFit Kids is scalable to all ability levels. The neat part about CrossFit Kids is the fact that because of the varied nature of the exercises and skills incorporated, every kid will excel and be challenged by different aspects of our program. This creates a fantastic learning and team environment.
WHO ARE THE COACHES?
CrossFit Roots Kids is coached by Trevor Gibson and Lauren Rubini. Trevor and Lauren put the fun in functional fitness:)
WHAT SHOULD MY KID WEAR?
Kids should come in athletic clothing and should bring a water bottle. Either tennis shoes or skate shoes (like DCs or Vans) are great footwear for what we do. Gatorade, fruit juices, and other sugary sports drinks are not permitted at the shop.
We ask that parents drop-off and pick-up their child before and after class. We find that children do best when they are given an environment with coaches and teammates only.
