Functional Fitness
Ever thought about how all this CrossFit stuff transfers to real life? Sure it makes us fit and look good but how do deadlifts and squats and pull-ups help us in our everyday lives of work, and family, and recreation?
A few years ago I was in Kirkwood Mountain Resort in California skiing with my brother Trevor. It was the first time we had been skiing/snowboarding together and after a few days on the mountain he announced that he was taking me up Chair 6 to the cornice. The cornice is an overhanging ridge of snow, the one at Kirkwood is about 10 feet tall.
Standing atop the cornice, Trevor stated that I could totally snowboard this run, all I had to do was drop into the cornice. Basically, I would just climb over the edge, hang from the wall, and drop in – rather than jumping off the cornice into the run. I was skeptical but game.
I climbed over the wall and stood on a ledge where I immediately decided, “no way in hell.” I announced this to Trevor who then told me there was no way I could get out of it now and that I had to just go for it.
I then told Trevor to stand on the edge where I then proceeded to grab his ankles and do a (weighted, w/ my board and boots) pull-up – pulling myself right out of the situation.
You never know when your fitness will come in handy.
A day in the life of some random dude in WY: ice climbing, kayaking, and crossfitting. Pretty cool! http://vimeo.com/29157334
