It’s that time of year. Between Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and our favorite summer BBQs with the neighbors, it can be hard to stick to good nutrition (especially when that chip bowl is eyeing you). Read on for tips from Connor on keeping your nutrition in check during cookout season.
- Eat vegetables and fruit early in the day before the event.
Especially if you’re going to somebody else’s bbq/house etc, ensure the meals/snacks prior contain as many fruits and vegetables as possible.
- Prioritize protein.
Most cookouts have some sort of protein as a main dish – chicken, brisket, sausage, etc. Start your plate with an adequate serving of protein.
- Bring your own dish.
If you’re going to somebody else’s event, it’s courteous to bring something – a side, dip, etc. Use this as a safety net to ensure there are whole food options you consider healthy or favorable.
- Don’t stress!
Balance is key, having a hot dog and a couple of beers, and enjoying yourself on a warm summer day is totally fine. If you’re eating meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar majority (80%+) of the time, enjoy!
