Originally from Cannelton, Indiana, Cary grew up playing baseball, basketball, and any other sport he could organize with friends. A love of sport led him to pursue baseball after high school at the University of Evansville. He began coaching after realizing that he enjoyed baseball but was much better at the training side than the sport itself. He would end up working as part of the Strength & Conditioning staff with all of the Division I athletes.
Cary started CrossFit in 2008 in the campus fitness center at Indiana University. He continued to coach through grad school, eventually took a job in Houston, bringing CrossFit to the campus in 2010.
In 2011 Cary moved to Santa Cruz, CA and began working for CrossFit HQ and continued to learn about the methodology, but pursued competition in favor of coaching. Cary has competed in six CrossFit Regional competitions from 2010-2016 on a team and as an individual.
In 2021, Cary moved to Boulder and immediately loved the community and level of coaching at Roots. The consistency of excellence inspired him to jump back into coaching CrossFit.
