March 2025 Newsletter

Dear Roots Crew,

The 2025 Open is here! CrossFit Roots currently sits eleventh in the world for member Open participation! Congrats to the 217 Roots athletes who signed up to participate, and thank you for representing Roots!

For many, the Open serves as a reminder of what our bodies can do and how hard we can push. That reminder serves us well in so many areas of our lives year after year.

You will build your personal fitness resume as we proceed through the three weeks. You will have strengths, and you will have weaknesses, and this is precisely the next step to be able to hone in on your efforts for the following year.

You may go through a wave of emotions as well. Some weeks, you’ll be on a high, proving to yourself that you are fitter than you thought, while other weeks, you may be tasked with a workout that stumps you. All of this is valuable information, and The Open is the most valuable way to collect it. And, at the end of the three weeks, we’ll take a moment to review our progress in classes and make a plan for the future.

Nowthere is one area of the Open where we truly need you to put your strengths on display! That is the Intramural one-off challenges of trivia, bowling, and hobby horse riding. Make sure you are in the know for the upcoming schedule of exciting events that deliver as many points as they do laughs!

Thank you to everyone working to make this Open special. From our sponsors (listed below!) to the athletes helping show new athletes the ropes as clipboards and sheets of paper grace the floor on Fridays – you help make the magic that is The Open, and we could not do it without you.

Here’s to Weeks 2 and 3!
Nicole

Congratulations, Amy – CF-L3!

We are thrilled to welcome Amy to the Certified Level 3 Trainer club! Last week, Amy passed this rigorous 4-hour exam, earning her the CrossFit Level 3 Trainer title!

Amy began coaching at Roots over two years ago after establishing herself as Roots’ General Manager (where, she crushed it, obviously!). As a GM, she quickly became a natural and integral part of nurturing Roots’ culture, community, and commitment to the standards of coaching and business that we hold so dear.

With her precision, dedication, and desire to excel no matter the task, Amy found a natural starting point on the coaching floor – and ran with it. Always looking at situations through the lens of a coach, her commitment to learning and growing in every situation to provide the best experience for the athletes she coached has made her development and growth in the field truly impressive – and is a testament to her efforts and desire to learn.

The CrossFit Level 3 credential is held by just a few thousand trainers worldwide. The credential is designed for an experienced individual who wants to demonstrate advanced CrossFit coaching knowledge and ability. To earn this credential, candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements, pass the CCFT examination, and commit to a long-term standard of professional accountability, which includes completing continuing education. The CCFT credential is accredited by the American National Standards Institute.

There is not a part of Roots that Amy has not made better, and we are proud to have her as a versatile force – a Swiss Amy Knife if you will – pushing the envelope and pushing us all to be better.

Clocking in at a whopping 120 pounds, what Amy lacks in size she MOVES in pounds ON the barbell. An accomplished weightlifter and CrossFitter, don’t chalk up her prowess on the shop floor as childhood talent or “genetics.” As someone who did not work out or play sports as a child and didn’t start working out until her mid-30s, Amy has earned her fitness in her 30s and 40s.

Amy, we are so proud of and happy for you! And good luck as Masters Nationals in April!

Spring Break at Roots

Are you going to be around during Spring Break? Awesome! So are we. We will hold all regular adult classes during the week of March 24 – March 28. There will be no Teens classes this week.

The Not a Challenge Health Challenge

We’ve all done it – the four-week challenge that leaves us looking shredded only to slide back a few months later.

We’re not knocking short-term challenges. We’ve held our fair share of them and will continue to do so, as they have tons of benefits to them and they are a vital part of any effort to make long-term changes to your fitness and health.

In the same way training at Roots isn’t a one-time perfect sprint – it’s a series of acquiring more habits that deliver long-term, consistent results – we know that the same efforts and mindset can be applied to building food and lifestyle habits that also deliver consistent and amazing results.

Exit: “habits in/habits out”

Enter: The Not a Challenge Health Challenge

After working with hundreds of athletes and understanding what drives long-term behavior and performance improvements, we’re introducing a 3-month guided event to help you build habits, one or two at a time, that you can maintain for life.

By the end of the challenge, you’ll have learned to incorporate healthy daily habits for the long haul.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Four 3-week phases introducing 1-3 new habits related to food, fitness, and lifestyle
  • InBody scans at the start and throughout the three-month period
  • Information and Resources explaining the WHY behind the elements being introduced as well as the tools to be successful
  • Winner earns a free month at CrossFit Roots PLUS a Free Foundations Course to gift to a friend or family member

Learn more at one of the Informational sessions:

  • Sunday, March 9, 10am
  • Thursday, March 13, 6:30am
  • Friday, March 21, 6:00pm

Details!

  • Start date: April 14
  • Hosted by Amy Smith, CF-L3 and Precision Nutrition Certified Coach
  • Cost: $250 and includes three InBody scans valued at $105

CrossFit Kids Spring Session

The CrossFit Roots Kids Program focuses on having fun, learning to move your body, and developing a love for challenge. Kids learn proper mechanics and consistency in a safe, supportive, structured environment.

This program is designed for kids 7-10 years old and will meet once a week during the following blocks.

  • Spring Session: April 23 – June 11
  • Wednesdays 3:30-4:15pm
  • $150

Each session is limited to 12 kids. Email [email protected] to reserve a spot for your child!

Middle School Camp for Girls

Coming summer 2025…the CrossFit Roots summer Performance Camp for middle school girls.

We are pleased to bring a four-day summer camp for rising and current middle school girls to CrossFit Roots. This camp will focus on strength and conditioning and athlete education for both sport-specific and everyday athletes.

Through training sessions, activities, and hands-on time in our in-house kitchen, girls will learn how to navigate the weight room, explore areas of strength and conditioning, learn the basics of meal preparation, and understand the value of being strong.

The camp is led by Nicole Christensen and Lukas Augenstein. Nicole is the owner of CrossFit Roots, a Level 4 CrossFit Coach, and currently coaches numerous aspiring and professional female athletes. Lukas Augenstein is a professionally trained chef and teacher who most recently was the head chef for an outdoor education school for 5th graders.

Stay tuned for camp dates! If you have questions, email [email protected]

Be On Time

What’s up Roots!? I understand the door was broken for a long time, preventing many people from getting in the door on time. But the door is fixed, and we ask you to hit a hard reset on your class arrival time.

We commit to you that we will end class on time and ask you to, in exchange, show up on time. This is the difference between joining a big box gym and joining a place where training happens.

Each time we post this, someone thinks, “Oh shit, was it me?”

The answer is simple – yes, maybe, probably, possibly. Only you can answer that question…

Thank you for your efforts on this.
