April 2026 Newsletter: Lazy Macros, Summer Youth Programs, Murph+ and More!

Dear Roots Crew,

Thank you to everyone who worked to make The Open so special this year. If you stayed after class to judge someone in the next class, or showed up on a Sunday to judge a friend, or helped encourage someone during a workout, we appreciate you so much. Thanks for lending a hand and helping spread the magic that is The Open!

And no Open season would be complete without congratulating our 2026 CrossFit Intramural Champions – Team C&C Muscle Factory. Congrats to team captains Caitlin and Cara, who led the charge.

While The Open might be over, it seems that the vibes are rolling right into spring. Whether you’re looking for a spring food challenge, details on Murph (with a new twist), more class options, a summer training program for your teen, or want to check out the coworking space – this newsletter will give you all the details you didn’t even know you needed!

Please help me welcome James – permanently! – to the coaching staff and help me welcome Lindsay BACK to the schedule.

Let’s roll,
Nicole

Nutrition Challenge Phase 2: Lazy Macros

If you’ve done the #800gChallenge®, and you are looking for what’s next, you’re in the right spot! And if you want to make moves to improve your nutrition but aren’t sure where to start, you’re also in the right spot!

Option 1 of our spring nutrition challenge will be the next phase of the #800gChallenge® – if you participated in the winter challenge, this next phase is for YOU. It’s time to add protein to the diet alongside your fruits and veggies: we’ll continue to focus on addition, not restriction, without complicated rules and micromanaging your food choices. The combination of doing the #800gChallenge® plus adding a protein target is dubbed: Lazy Macros®.

Option 2 of our spring nutrition challenge will be the #800gChallenge® and is for anyone who did not do the winter food challenge. This is the first step in our yearlong nutrition effort and a great place to start! You’ll focus on incorporating fruits and vegetables into your diet. New to Roots or didn’t participate in the winter challenge? Sign up for the #800gChallenge® during this time period instead!

Both challenge options will run from April 20th – May 19th.

The challenge is $89.* The challenge cost includes:

• 1 month access to the Three Pillars App ($39/month) where you’ll log your food, complete educational materials, and rise on the leaderboard!
• Two InBody scans – one before and one after the challenge!

* Please note! You will access the Lazy Macros and #800gChallenge via a monthly subscription that grants access to all the challenge has to offer. You can cancel your month-to-month subscription at any time. The challenge length is 29 days. Some athletes choose to continue logging and therefore keep their subscription after the challenge, while others subscribe just for the 1-2 months around the challenge.

Middle & High School Summer Session – NOW ENROLLING

Are you looking for a structured summer program to further your child’s athletic development? The Middle School and Teens summer programs start June 1st, and we are pumped to train with this group over the summer!

The CrossFit Teens program is built on the CrossFit methodology of constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity while considering age-appropriate training stimulus, growth and development through puberty, training environment, and more.

The Middle School and High School programs are for the student looking to improve their sports performance or create a positive relationship with fitness and health. Through a supportive and challenging environment, students become fast, explosive, powerful, strong, and agile. This program yields confidence and toughness that translates to the field, classroom, and life. By scaling speed, volume, load, and intensity, we make each session appropriate for the beginner through to the elite high school athlete.

Our Teens’ classes utilize much of the same equipment as adult classes. This class prepares teens to eventually enter adult classes. The motivations within each session balance fun and hard work with; coach approval to add weight, going faster, competition and athleticism with peers, setting new PRs, and acquiring skills.

With this as a focus, mechanics, and consistency are paramount to your child’s success. The coaching staff is highly committed to monitoring each athlete’s progress. Each training day has various assignments and goals for each athlete—each of these experiences is part of the training and development process.

Summer Schedule

Travel WODs & Summer Habits Challenge Back for Summer 2026

Traveling this summer? We’ve got you covered!

Summertime brings warm weather, gatherings with friends, and summer travel. We know these can impact your fitness, attendance, and your foundation, so we’re here to help!

For summer 2026, we’re bringing back a Travel Workout track in SugarWOD paired with our annual Not a Challenge Summer Habits Challenge – back by popular demand!

The Travel WOD Track will offer five travel workouts each week, specifically designed to keep you consistent, no matter where your adventures take you.

These Workouts Will:

  • Require minimal equipment (think hotel gym basics or your parents’ basement gear) or no equipment at all
  • Take 40 minutes or less from warm-up to finish, making it easier to fit fitness into your schedule
  • Be available exclusively to active members through SugarWOD from June 1st through August 31st
  • Pair perfectly with the Not a Challenge Summer Health Challenge!

The Summer Habits Challenge will focus on sustaining healthy food, activity, and lifestyle habits through the summer without missing out – or CUTTING out – all your favorite activities. More details coming soon but last year over 50 athletes signed up so don’t miss out!

Why We’re Offering This:

  1. For your fitness: Staying consistent, even minimally, during travel makes returning to regular training significantly easier. Remember how challenging it was during the pandemic to rebuild habits? Even short workouts while away can maintain your progress.
  2. For your social connection: Log your travel workouts and habits in SugarWOD to fistbump, comment, and encourage fellow Roots members even while you’re on the road. This keeps you connected to the community that motivates and inspires you, no matter where your summer adventures take you.
  3. Little Efforts Add Up: It’s common for athletes to think they are “failing” if their attendance or activity decreases during the summer. However, it’s normal for athletes to have a few weeks in the summer when they only make it into the shop 2 times in a week, down from their normal 4-5. The travel workouts will allow you to get to the shop and supplement with a workout at home when needed. Coming to the shop 2-3x per week during the summer and hitting a travel workout or two is WAY better than not attending for a few months. These are the types of efforts that lead to long-term fitness!

Thank you for your continued membership support during the summer months as this helps us maintain the vibrant community atmosphere and quality experience that make Roots special year-round! Thank you for supporting our small business, staying consistent, and logging your travel workouts! For members who stay active for June, July, and August, you’ll be entered to win three months of membership FREE for Fall 2026! Congrats to our 2025 winner – Greg Hertz!

CrossFit Over 60 is Not Only Possible. It is Essential.

“There is a persistent belief that after 60, physical decline is simply the natural outcome of getting older. We are told to slow down, to avoid intensity, and to accept loss of strength and independence as unavoidable. As a coach who works daily with older athletes, I can say confidently that this narrative is incomplete. Aging is inevitable. Decline is heavily influenced by behavior.”

Burgener Olympic Weightlifting is Coming to CrossFit Roots!

If you want to improve your clean & jerk and snatch, this two-day event is for you!

Spend two days with the Burgener Strength Team dialing in the fundamentals, drills and positions for both the snatch and clean & jerk in both coaching sessions and performance breakouts. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the positions, movements, and coaching needed to optimize athletic potential in Olympic Weightlifting. This course is open to athletes and coaches of all levels.

  • Dates: May 16-17
  • Time: 9am-5pm both days
  • Regularly $645, Early Bird Discount is $580 and ends April 6th!

The Ready State Podcast – From Injury to Recovery: The Truth About ACL Rehab for Young Athletes with Coach Carmen Bott

ACL tears and injuries in young athletes are becoming more prevalent. Our kids are becoming overskilled and under-strengthed, under-athletic. Did you know that Roots incorporates play, intuitive movement, and yes, preventative ACL exercises and movement patterns into our Middle School and Teens training sessions?

If you have a kid in sports, this podcast by our friends at The Ready State is a must-listen.

ACL tears used to be rare in high school sports. Today, they’re an epidemic. Behind the headlines, there’s one voice cutting through the noise with hard truths, practical solutions, and decades of experience: Coach Carmen Bott. Known online as “Coach Bott,” she’s become the go-to expert on youth athletic development and late-stage ACL rehab, guiding parents, athletes, and coaches through one of the most pressing crises in sports performance.

In this episode of The Ready State Podcast, Kelly and Juliet Starrett sit down with Coach Bott to dig into why so many kids are getting hurt, why recovery takes longer than most parents realize, and how we can protect the next generation of athletes.

InBody Scans

Schedule your InBody Scan for the Lazy Macros Challenge or simply for a progress update!

April 15 and 16 from 5am – 10:30am. Scans take no more than 15 minutes!

Coworking and Coffee

Have you had a chance to take advantage of the coworking space yet? We’ve heard from several members that it’s helping them get to the classes they prefer, cut out drive time, make appointments with Kyle from FullSwift Physio & Performance easier, and more! Be sure to check it out!

Murph +1: Save the Date!

Each year, CrossFit affiliates around the world do the Hero workout Murph in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy who was killed in Afghanistan in June of 2005. CrossFit has had a long relationship with the military and has honored service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice through Hero workouts and this year we’re offering two ways to honor those service members.

On Sunday, May 24 we will hold our annual Murph event.

New for this year! You’ll have the option to do Murph or a second Hero workout option. We’ll announce the second option in the next few weeks!
