October 2025 Newsletter

Dear Roots Crew,

Have you ever stopped to think about how damn amazing the athletes you work out next to on the daily really are? I think about it often.

Just like you, they’re putting in the work, arranging their life schedules around training in the shop, making good choices in the kitchen, and realizing the mundane but necessary element of driving their health and fitness, which is consistent hard work.

One of those amazing athletes is Margaret Hegwood. I hope you’ll take a moment to listen to her Athlete Spotlight interview that is full of insight and honesty. Thank you, Margaret, for taking the time to sit down together and share your learnings – I know many athletes will benefit from your insight!

Fall t-shirt orders are due this Sunday, October 5th. We’re bringing back a Roots classic—so good we had to reprint it after Eric (tragically) lost his. Don’t miss the shirt that literally put Roots on the map.

From Misfit Athlete Camp to the Fall Chalk Talk Series, a new Olympic Weightlifting class time, member perks at the Dragontree Sanctuary, and Homecoming Week – make sure you’re in the know!

This month’s newsletter is packed, so grab a coffee and a cozy hoodie—we’ve got athlete stories, Save the Dates, attendance challenge updates, and more.

See you at the shop,

Nicole

Athlete Spotlight: Meet Margaret!

Next up in our monthly Athlete Spotlight series – Margaret Hegwood!

Margaret dishes on a TON of profound and valuable information that would help any athlete grow and develop. Tune in to learn about how Margaret wanted to have fitness goals based on fitness, not aesthetics, how she made the mental shift from exercise to training, why scaling is good, and how to fail upwards.

This t-shirt first debuted in 2016 and was Eric’s favorite. He lost this shirt, so we’re reprinting it…

Congrats to the Athletes of Girls Gone RX

Last month, two teams of athletes competed in the Girls Gone RX competition here in Boulder. Congrats to Caitlin, Sarah F, and Alli for taking 1st place in the BAM division and to Sarah W, Ashley, and Cara for an awesome debut showing on the competition floor!

It’s never too late to jump into the world of competing in CrossFit! Great work to these six women!

Interim Coach Position

We’re looking to hire an INTERIM COACH!

While one of our coaches is out on maternity leave, we are excited to offer a temporary coaching position for an experienced coach who wishes to learn and develop in a new environment.

This position is ideal for a current CrossFit Level 1, 2, or 3 trainer who aspires to make coaching and/or affiliate ownership their career and wants to learn and contribute to a fun, high-energy CrossFit environment.

The position will run from January – March, 2026. The application window closes on October 10.

Fall Chalk Talk Series: Roots Culture

Join us for the second installment of the Fall Chalk Talk Series.

There are many elements of Roots training, coaching, and community that are a small but integral part of who we are and what we do, as well as the training environment we want to create. Come learn about our culture, why it’s important, and why it delivers on a higher level of health and fitness for YOU.

Saturday, October 18th at 10:30am

Why do we write every name up on the board every single day? Why didn’t we just go digital like many gyms? Why does every athlete report their score amongst all the athletes every day? Why do we have a Sportsmanship Award? Why don’t the coaches coach while they are taking class? Why isn’t there an Rx+ option? Why don’t we sub like movements, what’s the big deal if you do bar muscle ups if you don’t have ring muscle ups? And why can’t we step-up if you can jump on a lower height?

Culture.

CrossFit Education Section

In 2012, I had a sticker on my water bottle that said, “CrossFit is dangerous, don’t try it.” It was a reaction to the many people who would ask about CrossFit, acknowledge the amazing transformations they had seen among family and friends, and who would then argue why they could never do it. Most of the arguments revolving around the safety of doing CrossFit.

The notion that CrossFit is dangerous has been one of the most frequently used criticisms of the program. But are those claims accurate, legitimate, proven?

Check out this recent CrossFit podcast with Dr. Zach Long, DPT, where he breaks down the claims. This is essential viewing for anyone who has ever had to defend their CrossFit results and success.
