MEET A COACH
How many years have you been CrossFitting?
5.5 years
Where were you born and raised?
Alexandria, VA
What’s your life story in four sentences?
As a kid I loved baseball, lived in Saudi Arabia for two years, and was a bit of a crybaby. I then went to college, served in the Marine Corps, became less of a crybaby, went to grad school, and became a teacher. For the last three years I’ve taught Algebra 2 to 10th graders, helping a few of them and scaring most of them. This is the fourth sentence.
Married, family, kids?
No. My family is great.
What was your first CrossFit workout?
Cindy. I didn’t know how to kip but I could do a lot of dead hang pull ups. It was physically devastating.
What is your favorite CrossFit workout?
Anything with a barbell and rope climbs.
What is your least favorite CrossFit workout?
Karen (150 wall balls for time)
What did you do for your career before coming on at Roots?
Taught high school math at a great charter school in California.
What is your favorite CrossFit story?
Not sure I have one in particular, but anytime I’m around someone getting his or her first pull-up or first rope climb, or first muscle-up it’s super fun. For many people, pull-ups and rope climbs were left behind in 3rd grade gym class, so reclaiming them is a jolt of accomplishment and youthful spirit.
When did you start coaching? What sport?
Coached swimming in the summers starting in 1998. Have been coaching CrossFit for three years.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to help an athlete perform or move better?
My girlfriend and I convinced a group of high school kids to show up at 6:30 in the morning three times a week before school started, workout in a dirty parking garage, and then go to class without showering. On a cold morning, I naively thought my kitchen torch would help make the outdoor pull-up bars bearable to hold. It did not.
What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?
I enjoy hanging out with my girlfriend, reading, and cooking.
Additional comments?
I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, and for the challenge of learning a few hundred names!
Welcome back Trevor! Is that a mouse in your pocket?
Hey Trevor, I think you’re going to like it here. It nice to have another shaved head in the box, to replace Zac’s and to keep Ryan company
Welcome back, Trevor!
Cool on Cool, dude.
