We love CrossFit for many reasons. Some of the more obvious and apparent reasons are tied to athleticism, training, coaching, and community; however, there are other aspects of CrossFit and our shop that are not at the forefront of our training but are near and dear to Eric and I.
In its very small way, a CrossFit training program and our shop are sustainable. I know what you’re all thinking, “Oh come on Nicole, you’re trying to jump on the business sustainability bandwagon.” I’m right there with you, yesterday I heard a radio ad as to why a certain brand of potato chips are sustainable, but hear me out! The only things we plug in are a stereo, a timing clock, and a computer. We don’t power up machines to get you fit, YOU are the machine. Think about the power required to run a big box gym with plug-in ellipticals, treadmills, and TVs. Also think about the parking, heating, and cooling needs of the typical 50,000 square foot gym (for reference, our space is 1,100 square feet). We utilize CraigsList to find used but perfectly great equipment and whenever possible we buy our new equipment from local vendors or manufacturers.
A neat fact that many of you may not know is that back in May Renewable Choice Energy, a company based in Boulder, sponsored CrossFit Roots with a 100% offset of our electricity usage. How does this work? Renewable Choice Energy purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) which guarantee that the energy we pull from the grid is replaced with energy from a clean renewable source, such as wind. For more information on how it works, click here or, next time you’re working through warm-up ask Blakely, Kevin, or Aran what this is all about.
Thank you to Renewable Choice Energy for its sponsorship. Our clean burning athletes very much appreciate it.
