challenge overview
- This spring’s challenge was designed to be a perfect starting point for individuals who have not yet explored the world of Paleo eating. In addition, we designed the challenge for Paleo veterans who are moving in a great direction with their Paleo efforts but need to look at some fine tuning.
- The challenge will be 40 days in length
- The challenge focus areas are: before and after indicators (hard numbers!), accountability in food consumption and logging, and consistency in shop attendance. Each area will be measured or tracked throughout the 40 days.
- The challenge will crown a male and female winner. Read below for prize information!
challenge calendar
- Wednesday, April 11th – challenge sign-up made available on MBO
- Monday, April 16th – mobile hydrostatic body fat testing and Challenge Meeting at 7:00 AM or 6:00 PM (mandatory)
- Sunday, April 22nd – challenge begins
- Thursday, May 31 – mobile hydrostatic body fat retest, prizes awarded, and challenge end at the May Cool Cruel Summer Benchmark WOD evening event!
challenge structure in relation to overarching themes
- Indicators (before and after) – pictures, body fat percentage and lean body mass, weight. We have arranged for a mobile hydrostatic body fat truck to come to Roots before and after the challenge (see challenge calendar above for dates)
- Accountability – daily food logging and coach monitoring, notes/feedback in log on 2-3 day basis, email communication for questions and guidance
- Consistency – workout 5x/week. Four of those workouts must be WODs (no specialty classes). Fifth workout can be another WOD, a specialty class, or an outdoor activity.
challenge cost – $180.00
- Includes the before and after hydrostatic body fat testing ($60) and bi-weekly coach food log monitoring, feedback, and guidance.
paleo margs or no etoh??
Hey Lynn –
Everyone will get one “win meal” per week. A win meal can be anything you like, including alcohol or non-Paleo foods. The idea behind this is to ease some of the anxiety and stress folks often feel on a food challenge of not being able enjoy situations like weddings, social events, or the occasional Paleo marg:)
Bottom line: Alcohol? Yes, one time per week.
WOD 1.0 on Tuesday at 5:30 pm will be working on PULL-UPS!
Instead of adding on Zone, can we add on IF instead?
Hi Tiffany –
Thanks for the suggestion but IF is not part of this challenge. It was part of the last challenge!
If we aren’t one of the “lucky” 30 to get into the challenge, can we pay to get our body fat tested? If not / alternatively, does anyone know where one can go to get similar testing done? Thanks!
Jake,
Once we have scheduled all of the challenge folks for the test we will open up any remaining spots for sign-up. If you do a google search for “bodyfat testing boulder colorado” you get a number of local resources. Not all are hydrostatic but a number of methods out there are quite reliable. Hope this helps.
Awesome, thanks!
Lucie – looks like that was a :43 second PR from last month! Nice work.
Thanks Nicole! I try, I try…:)
Nicole,
Do the CFE workouts count as WODs? I know they are specialty WODS, but they are HARD and I can’t imagine doing more.
This challenge coincides with my “fit into your wedding dress” challenge!
Lori –
Great question. If you are in the CFE program, then all of your attendances as part of the CFE program count as WODs for you. So whether it’s CFE, group WOD, or CFE-WOD, it all counts towards your 5.
If you are not in the CFE program, then the CFE class on Mondays would count as your 5th WOD (a specialty class), but not as a regular group class WOD.
Hope this clears things up!
Is it paleo/paleo or paleo/primal (ie, is raw grass-fed milk/yogurt/cheese ok?)
Hi Lauren –
It’s Paleo, not Paleo primal. No dairy allowed in this challenge, except in your one “win meal” each week in which you are allowed to eat whatever food you would like.
what about those of us on 3x/week plans? I guess we’re required to upgrade to Unlimited for the challenge? I’m also spooked about not having enough time/energy left to go for mountain bike rides if I’m doing WODs 4x/week.
Hi Andria –
If you’re on a 3x/week plan you will need to upgrade for this challenge.
We understand the concern of adding 1 extra workout a week but think of it as stepping up to the challenge! You can do it and the fitness benefits could be tremendous for your biking abilities.
If you’re coming 3x/week now and biking, adding a 4th WOD per week will be a great addition. We can discuss more next time you’re at the shop if you’d like!
Jake; If you’d like I’ll check you out and give you my honest opinion of how you look naked, before and after.
Ben
I’m definitely interested but a little uncertain about the workout requirement. In other words, I am not sure whether or not it is a good idea for me to jump back into WODs at the level of 4 days per week at 7 weeks post baby. There seems to be conflicting information out there about how intensely I should be working out in terms of impact especially. My plan was to start back with more swimming than WODs and then adding more and more WODs each week. This would be a big jump. Any thoughts?
Hi Stephanie, I don’t have the trainer perspective or expertise, but I can share my post-pregnancy perspective with you. I came back to CF at 7 weeks post-baby at 3X week, with at least one a strength or lifting class and at most 2 WODS, and I haven’t gone up yet (am 6.5 months out now). It was more exhausting than I thought it would be. But you’re fitter than I am so your mileage may vary. You might want to think about whether you want to be doing such a strict eating regimen and food journaling so soon after birth, especially if you’re breastfeeding (none of my business). I just know that even though I stayed paleo through pregnancy and after, food became very emotional and my food needs varied a lot with producing for the kiddo, and with being so tired, having to do all that record keeping and focusing would have done me in mentally. I’ve been strict paleo for 3 years and you won’t find a bigger advocate than me, but the rules and regs of a challenge would have been yet another stressor on a new mama. May be worth chatting with Tracy about this too as I have never done a nutrition challenge at Roots.
I am traveling for 5 days during the challenge, won’t have a car, and will be eating out the entire time. Could that be workable?
