August 2025 Newsletter

Dear Roots Crew,

Remember doing the Open back in March? Well, the final stage of the Open is upon us…the 2025 CrossFit Games kick off in Albany, New York, this Friday! Whether you consider yourself a CrossFit newbie, competitor, athlete, or proud member of the cult;), the CrossFit Games are for our community what the Super Bowl is for football fans. Although one key distinction might be that we “play” CrossFit daily at our affiliate – no armchair quarterbacks here.

The CrossFit Games are the pinnacle of expression of what is possible through CrossFit in terms of fitness and sport. It’s relatable to every single one of us because we live it daily.

This year, the GOAT, Tia-Clair Toomey, will be vying for her 8th championship title. She has won the Games six times in a row, her seventh win coming after taking a year off while pregnant with her daughter. She’s a fierce competitor and powerful positive force in our corner of the world, and I hope you take some time to watch her road to the Games.

For in-house inspiration and motivation, check out our very first Athlete Spotlight series interview with 9-year member Rae Vita. Rae has been a powerful force on the shop floor, and I was thrilled when she agreed to share her story.

As we transition from summer to fall, and enthusiastically send kids back to school or recapture routine, take a moment to reflect on what you want to achieve in the upcoming year. What do you want your class attendance to look like, what’s the skill you’re going to get this year, what are you going to do to be consistent to support your nutrition?

Root(s) for each other,
Nicole

Member Spotlight: Rae Vita

Meet Rae – Mom, wife, veteran, and Roots athlete since 2016.

Rae commissioned as an officer in the Army in 2012 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. After completing airborne school, she moved to Fort Bragg, where she served as a paratrooper and logistics officer.

She deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 2015, and it was there that she was first introduced to CrossFit.

Tune in to learn about how Rae found her people at Roots, what the hell is bar checking (and why it matters), and why you should always find a daycare that does pick-up on the half hour.

Roots Golf Outing 2025

There are still a few slots available for the Roots Golf 2025 event held on August 14th at Lake Valley Golf Club, north of Boulder. Starting times are from 1:00-2:00pm, depending on the team.

Two divisions:

  • RX – Play a normal round of golf. Suitable for players who have played before and have no problem keeping up with pace of play.

Misconceptions About CrossFit

Whether you’re brand new or 10 years in, this conversation will help you better understand the program — and stay in it for life.

Stephane Rochet (CF-L3) is a former D1 collegiate strength and conditioning coach at top-tier athletic programs, a former CrossFit Seminar Staff Flowmaster, and currently serves as CrossFit HQ’s Senior Content Writer. With more than two decades of experience, few people are more qualified to drop the hammer on the most common misconceptions about CrossFit. In this episode, Stephane joins Denise to break down what CrossFit actually is — and what it isn’t.

Together, Stephane and Denise tackle myths around intensity, scaling, technique, injury, aging, and burnout. Stephane shares how he implemented CrossFit in a collegiate S&C setting, why technique always comes before intensity, and how to reset when training stops feeling right.
