Crocktoberfest 2013 – Introducing the Judges
We’ve put together an ALL-STAR CAST of judges for this year’s Crocktoberfest. American Idol judges – step aside. Top Chef judges – out of the way. This crew is LE-GIT (and they won’t quit).
Back for their second and third years judging respectively – coaches Eric Christensen and Shane Upchurch. Having both judged the inaugural Crocktoberfest in 2011 AND both having a love for all things meat – the judging staff is grounded by these two.
And now we introduce to you the newest members of the crew!
Blaine Guenther – coach at CrossFit Roots
Julia Buonanno – owner, South Walnut Cafe
Jake Cohen – owner, Noble Savage Foods
Want to know a little bit about the judges?
How many crockpots have you owned in your lifetime?
Blaine: When we moved to Boulder last year, we thought we lost our crockpot. We bought another, then found our old one. We currently own two!
Julia: I have never successfully cooked anything in a crockpot
Jake: I think 3. The first was a hand me down from my mom from the 80s. A lot of flavor in that pot. I have recently bought a new one that brews up equally delicious food but doesn’t get alkward looks when I bring it out.
What special tasting quality do you bring to the judging crew?
Blaine: In college I played offensive line and weighed about 70 lbs more than I do now. I’ll be calling upon my years of fatness to guide me toward the tastiest dish.
Jake: I grew up in Lake Tahoe where water flows like wine. It is pure and fresh so I bring a pure and fresh taste to the competition.
Are you a recipe follower? Or do you fudge it?
Blaine: Definitely fudge it. The only problem is it can be hard to recreate something I liked because I don’t remember how much I used of which ingredient.
Julia: I start with a recipe and then channel the rest
Jake: In my business I follow a recipe to the gram as that is part of our food philosophy. In my home cooking I love to just throw things together. I have a good eye so don’t measure anything.
If your crockpot could sing, what song would it play?
Blaine: Maybe the baby back ribs song from Chili’s commercial?
Julia: When I pull my crockpot out after her long long stay in the cupboard I am pretty sure she will be singing “All the single ladies…”
Jake: Probably some classic rock. A little music helps when you cook.
I don’t get evites for some reason so I can’t RSVP. But I’m coming! Should I sign up on MBO?
Sign-up on MBO if you’re registering a dish for the competition. If you’re coming to mix/mingle/sample, we’ve got your rsvp! Thanks!
