The Colorado Open
The Colorado Open will take place in Denver, Colorado from August 27-29, 2010 at Front Range CrossFit. The Open will include both individual and affiliate team competitions. These events are a blast! We encourage everyone to compete at this awesome CrossFit community competition.
Individual ($65)
The individual competition will take place Saturday and Sunday with 2 workouts on the first day and 1 workout on the second day. For the individual workouts, athletes will have the ability to scale to any ability level.
Affiliate Team ($50/person)
The Affiliate Team Competition consists of 2 men and 2 women. There will be one affiliate team workout each day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). There is no substitutions so Affiliate Team athletes must be able to attend all three days. In general, the Affiliate Team workouts will be heavier and require more skill. From the Colorado Open website: All Affiliate Team members will need to be able to do muscle-ups and handstand push-ups. The Affiliate Team workouts will not be scaled.
Read this next bit carefully: The scoring for the Affiliate Team Competition will be the total scores from each Team Workout, plus the top male and female score from your Affiliate in each individual workout. So every athlete that you bring to compete has the potential to help your Affiliate Team’s result.
To clarify that last bit, anyone who competes as an individual has the potential to help our affiliate team. For example, if Tracy Emmanuel scores 1st place in the first individual workout, her score is added to our Roots affiliate team score. In short, individual competitors have the ability to better the affiliate team score as well as compete for an individual title. Whoa!
If there is interest, Roots will take an affiliate team to the competition. Affiliate Team members may not also compete individually. You must choose one or the other.
Potential Exercise and Loads
A list of potential exercises and the max possible load will be posted tomorrow. Remember, the individual workouts can be scaled for anyone’s ability level.
So, who’s coming with us?:) Post to comments if you are interested in competing as an individual OR on an affiliate team. Also post any questions and we’ll respond throughout the day.
As a side note – ladies, we need another woman who can rep out muscle-ups AND handstand push-ups. You’ve got 7 weeks to make it happen!
I’d like to do the individual but if you’re short on guys for the team I can fill in. I also have a wig and my famous short-shorts so I can go as “Lauretta” if need be. Yeah, I went there.
Is Strength class meeting in the shop or at the park?
I am interested in competing in the individual competition. I think Lauretta is a great idea. It’s like in the movie Lady Bugs.
One more thing I forgot to mention… I would encourage anyone who is interested in competing to sign up even if you are new to CF or timid about some of the movements. Molly and I competed for the first time last year and still had to use bands for pull-ups. The day of the competition, we did 45 pull-ups without bands for the first time. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you have adrenaline and a room full of people cheering for you. DOOO IT!
I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be in Colorado that weekend, but if I am, I’d like to go. How soon does the team composition need to be figured out? I’m inches away from a full ROM handstand push-up but am happy competing on a team or as an individual.
I agree with Emily. Even if you’re not all fired up about competition, one of the big ideas for Crossfit is constantly-varied, and one can expect a very different atmosphere at the CO Open than at any WOD anyone has done at Roots so far.
As of right now, strength is outside. We’ll post update by 2pm today if we move inside!:)
OK. so I didn’t think that I would ever want to compete, but now I think that I might. But I would want to do individual, not team at this point.
I’m definitely interested… would love to compete on the team – but gotta get crackin’ on my HSPU!! either way tho…. i would be happy competing as an individual too… whatever makes the most sense!
i agree with emily and karl! these events are SUPER encouraging… i think that surprised me the most when i first started attending these events. everyone is super supportive and encouraging, not just for their own gym peeps, but for everyone competing… its a great atmosphere, and i highly encourage folks to sign up!
Interested in either the team or individual competition. As Karl was saying, when will the team slots be decided? – will there be tryouts? – are we even going to field a team? Not sure if it is going to be an issue if we need to get signed up now before the slots fill up for the Open? Really looking forward to competing again.
I echo the previous comments as well, it is amazing what the atmosphere in competition will enable you to achieve. Prior to sectionals, I had only done a total of 3 muscle ups. I was able to do 9 during the competition. Plus with scaling options, everyone is able to compete to get your personal best performance. It’s fun!
I plan to sign up as an individual.
Count me in for either the individual or the team. I am leaning on the individual. Perhaps a weekend Roots competition would be in order to help noobies like me get the feel of what to expect
What ya think?
PLEASE NOTE: We have moved the 6pm strength class back to Roots. The 4pm Foundations and 5pm WOD will take place at North Boulder Park.
Thanks!
Wow, with all of this encouragement to compete, I would like to give it a try as an individual. OK, time to get cracking!
Sweet! I am really excited about this! From the posts so far, we have:
Individual:
Lawrence
Emily
Christy
Molly
Lori
Team or Individual:
TYD
Dizon
Team:
Nicole
Tracy
To answer questions:
1. If you decidedly want to compete as an individual, you should do so and should not feel obligated to be on the team. Remember, you can help the team as an individual competitor as well! If this is your choice, I recommend you register asap.
2. Affiliate Team members need to be solidified PRIOR to August 20th. If Roots commits to taking a team, then I will register a team this weekend.
3. Affiliate Team tryouts – yes, if needed. For example, if we have 3 men who want to be on an affiliate team then we will hold tryouts; however, it seems that people may be interested in either in which case it may just be a discussion amongst those interested to see who competes where.
Let’s wait through the weekend to gather all interest and then follow-up with direct email correspondence.
Ok. I think I’ll do the individual. The last thing I ever competed in was beer drinking so this is definitely out oft comfort zone.
After seeing how happy Nicole was this morning when I mentioned that I was thinking about competing as an individual, I’m in. With trepidation.
