Have a few days off this holiday season? Take an hour to watch Dr. Robert Lustig’s (Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California – San Francisco) presentation on the impact of sugar (mainly fructose) on the health of Americans. If you care about your health, you’ll take the hour to watch it!
The part of all of this that I can’t wrap my head around is why the hell no one regulates all of this. Aren’t the governing bodies ideally supposed to do what’s best for the people of the country that they govern? If they are, how is this out in the open and respected (along with a variety of other conclusions that say similar things) yet we continue to pour HFCS into everything we make.
Dr. Lustig talks about how Nixon fundamentally changed the American diet. Well, why haven’t we had another president who has studied this and done something to change it? At the end when he says that it’s our job to regulate the fructose in our lives because the FDA isn’t doing it, why is it solely on us?
Do I eat HFCS? Yeah, it’s hard to escape it. The hardest part of the paleo challenge for me was the point where my brain went, “I need that fake sugar stuff that’s in everything,” and I had to deny myself even something that seems healthy on the surface like Motts applesauce.
In the end, reforming nutrition is the same as reforming the energy we use to power the world: there’s too much money in doing it wrong to ever imagine doing it right.
Bottom line, there are a lot of people making a ton of money of this crap….from the food industry all the way through the health care system. The last group of people I trust with my health is the FDA, it’s a joke!
My dad used to work for a factory that made HFCS for Pepsi for over 20 years!
